Stronger Together: The Critical Role of Community Relations in the Mining Industry

1 minute

Ava is committed to working with responsible mining companies, engaging with communities and local suppliers in the vicinity of mines to foster positive change.

Building a strong relationship with the local community is critical to successful operations both for the mines themselves, and the logistics companies who provide services to them. By their very nature, mines must – in various ways – rely heavily on the surrounding area. If the local people and environment are not being supported or treated well, relations can become strained and have damaging effects.

Without proactive community engagement, mining operations risk causing environmental degradation, health issues, economic instability or social tensions that can seriously impact both the community and the mine's long-term success.

A well-run mining operation will proactively work to minimise any potential negative impacts, fostering positive change by prioritising sustainable practices, investing in community wellbeing, and building long-term, trust-based relationships with local stakeholders.

Social License to Operate

A Social License to Operate is much more than a legal licence, it’s about earning the trust and support of local people. The licence is essential for successful mining companies as it represents approval from the community to operate.

The licence is linked to how much a company invests in reducing the socio-economic and environmental risks and impacts of the mine. In other words, it’s the duty of care that the mining company has towards the environment and community where they are working.

Operations must be sustainable for the local community, both environmentally (as far as possible), and for the local people involved in its work. A mining company must ‘earn’ its social licence in host countries in order to maintain positive partnerships both with governments and the local communities.

As with any business, “You are only as strong as the weakest link in the chain”, so it is also imperative that mines use reputable and responsible logistics providers to transport the mined metals onwards to the refinery.

Building a Future for Everyone

Having good community relations goes far beyond business; it’s about building a sustainable future for everyone. Ava’s ethical business practices are the foundation for all our partnerships and the relationships we have with our clients. Rather than running our own fleet of vehicles, we engage with the best local companies in the region where mines are located, selecting only to partner with those who are actively involved in positive community initiatives.

We work with mines, refineries and transportation companies who value positive community interactions and understand the value of them – not only in creating smoother and more reliable logistics for themselves, but by improving the lives of those affected by their operations.

We believe that transparent communication is vital to building trust, along with proactive and regular engagement with local communities. It is essential to understand community needs, concerns and cultural values in order to effect real positive change.

Key areas:

  • Infrastructure projects that benefit both the community and the company. This might include improving roads, sourcing energy and providing water resources.
  • Healthcare support that demonstrates a commitment to the wellbeing of those who work in or live near the mine. Healthier communities lead to more stable, reliable operations.
  • Local education, training programmes, scholarships and school partnerships that equip local communities with valuable skills and create a legacy of community development … as well as investing in the workforce of tomorrow today.
  • Employment opportunities and apprenticeships that boost the community’s income and level up the skills of workers, potentially opening up pathways for career development in the wider industry.
  • Collaborating with local businesses to boost the local economy and keep the adult population working and earning.
  • Demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility and sustainable resource management is crucial as it shows communities that the mining company and their supply chain value their long-term well-being and the health of their shared environment.

A Thriving Community

Building strong relationships and sharing benefits with local communities are at the core of best practice in community relations. We are excited to share that Ava is in the early stages of setting up a foundation to enhance our support for incredibly worthwhile community initiatives. We will be sharing more details on this in 2025, so be sure to follow our socials to learn more about this in the New Year.

The mining industry, and the logistics companies who transport their precious metals, can often face a range of social and political challenges, so building trust with local communities is essential to navigating these complexities effectively. Without community trust, companies could encounter numerous operational obstacles that would hinder long-term success.

When communities thrive, so do the businesses within them, as trust and stability create smoother, more resilient operations. By establishing and maintaining open lines of communication with community leaders, mining companies and their suppliers can proactively address concerns, foster transparency, and build a solid foundation of trust that supports both community well-being and business objectives.

Conclusion

Ava  recognises that long-term success in the mining supply chain depends on much more than just operational efficiency – it requires a deep, lasting commitment to the wellbeing and prosperity of the communities where we work.

By aligning our goals with those of the local communities and fostering genuine partnerships based on transparency, ethical practices and proactive engagement, we aim to build a legacy of mutual trust and shared growth.

When local communities thrive, the mining industry thrives alongside them, creating resilient, sustainable operations that benefit all parties involved.

Ava remains committed to setting the standard for responsible community relations, ensuring that our operations not only support but uplift the regions we serve. Together, we’re building a future where community and business prosper hand-in-hand.
